Brief description of the role
Key responsibilities and day to day tasks of the job
On a typical day, I assist the site supervisor and construction team by monitoring daily progress and ensuring that work is being carried out according to the project plans and safety standards. I conduct regular site inspections, checking that materials and equipment are in place and that construction activities follow the scheduled timeline. I help with basic measurements and take notes to document any issues or delays.
I also support the team by preparing daily progress reports, recording observations about work quality, safety compliance, and any unexpected challenges that arise on site. Attending site meetings with contractors, engineers, and project managers is part of my routine, where I contribute by providing updates from the field and learning how coordination between different parties works.
Additionally, I assist with organizing construction materials, tracking deliveries, and helping to maintain a clean and safe work environment. When necessary, I help review technical drawings and learn how to interpret construction plans, which deepens my understanding of the building process.
Overall, my day involves a mix of hands-on fieldwork, reporting, and collaborative problem-solving, giving me valuable insight into the practical side of residential construction projects.
Skills most important for success in this role
Basic Construction Knowledge
Understanding terms like slabs, foundations, elevations, etc., is essential to support the site manager and contractors.
Communication Skills
You’ll liaise with site teams, suppliers, and sometimes clients — clear and respectful communication is key.
Problem-Solving & Initiative
Construction sites are dynamic. Being able to think on your feet or flag issues early is valuable.
Organisation & Time Management
Tracking materials, helping manage schedules, and ensuring that tasks are completed on time requires a well-organised mindset.
Tech Familiarity (Bonus)
Ability to use tools like Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or basic construction project software (e.g., PlanGrid, Buildertrend) can make you more effective.
School subjects / tertiary courses / required certificates
For this role, subjects like Mathematics, Technology, and Physical Sciences are very helpful as they build a good foundation for understanding construction concepts. Tertiary courses in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Built Environment studies are ideal paths to follow. It’s also important to have a valid construction safety certification, such as a Construction Health and Safety Training (CHST) or similar, to ensure you understand site safety protocols and regulations.
Kind of work environment (e.g Office based, remote, fieldwork etc)
The work environment is primarily fieldwork-based, as most of the tasks take place directly on the construction site. However, there are also elements of office-based work when reviewing plans, preparing reports, and attending project meetings. It’s a hands-on environment that requires being outdoors in varying weather conditions, working alongside construction teams, and frequently moving between different areas of the site.

Junior Site Clerk or Site Supervisor
After gaining experience and qualifications, you may assist in managing teams or small projects.
Construction Project Manager
Oversees the entire project from planning through handover.
Quantity Surveyor
Manages the financial and contractual side of building projects.
