"Empowering Futures, One Connection at a Time."
On a daily basis, I assist the research scientists by preparing and organizing samples for testing, ensuring all materials are properly labeled and stored. I help calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments such as spectrometers, solar simulators, and chemical analyzers to ensure accurate results. I conduct routine tests on renewable energy materials like solar cells or biofuel samples under supervision, recording data meticulously in lab notebooks and digital databases.
Part of my role includes cleaning and sterilizing lab equipment and maintaining safety protocols to create a safe working environment. I also support the team by setting up experiments, monitoring test progress, and troubleshooting minor technical issues with equipment. Attending team meetings and contributing observations or suggestions based on experimental data helps me understand the broader research goals and challenges.
>> Precision is critical when conducting experiments, handling data, and working with sensitive instruments.
>> Ability to interpret scientific data, follow protocols, and draw accurate conclusions from results
>> Familiarity with lab equipment (e.g., spectrometers, centrifuges), sample preparation, and proper lab techniques.
>> Using software for data entry, analysis, and lab report writing — often includes Excel, lab-specific programs, or data logging tools.
>> Writing clear lab notes, reporting findings to supervisors, and collaborating with research teams.
School Subjects:
>>Mathematics – For data analysis and understanding experimental results.
>>Physical Sciences (Physics & Chemistry) – Essential for grasping principles of energy, materials, and lab work.
>>Biology – Useful if working with biofuels or biological energy sources.
>>Computer Studies – Helpful for data recording and using lab software.
Tertiary Courses:
>>National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, or Applied Sciences.
>>Laboratory Technology or Science Laboratory Practice diplomas.
>>Short courses or certifications in Renewable Energy Technologies, Lab Safety, or Analytical Techniques can be beneficial.
Required Certificates:
>>Matric Certificate (Grade 12) with relevant science subjects.
>>Laboratory Safety Certification (often provided by employers or training bodies).
>>First Aid Certificate (sometimes required for lab environments).
The work environment is primarily lab-based, involving a clean, controlled, and safety-focused setting. It’s indoors with access to specialized scientific equipment and instruments used for testing and analysis. The lab is usually well-ventilated and follows strict protocols to ensure safety and accuracy.
The role requires careful attention to detail and adherence to health and safety guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment like lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles. Collaboration with researchers and other technicians is common, making communication and teamwork important.
Depending on the project, there may be occasional visits to outdoor test sites or pilot plants, but most of the work happens inside the facility.
A possible progression is as follows
Junior Laboratory Technician / Lab Assistant (Permanent Role) >> Senior Lab Technician / Laboratory Analyst >> Research Assistant / Research Technologist >> Laboratory Manage >> Specialised Technician Roles >> Quality Control / Quality Assurance Analyst >> Scientific Sales or Technical Support >> Scientific Sales or Technical Support >> Many lab techs pursue further studies (BSc Honours, MSc, etc.) to become researchers, lab-based scientists, or technical specialists.
>> Many academic institutions offer research internships to undergrads or postgrads in science-related courses.
>> Organisations like the CSIR, SANEDI, or agricultural and environmental research centres regularly take interns.
>> Environmental NGOs or Energy Startups – Especially those working in water testing, air quality, or energy tech — these may offer project-based internships or volunteer roles.
